    What Impact Are Your Managers Having?


    There’s a saying that ‘people join organisations but leave managers’ and in my experience it rings pretty true.  While some turnover in an organisation is actually a good thing, you don’t want to be losing your top talent and high potentials due to their relationship with a particular manager.  I am very clear with all the managers that I work with that striving for a group of ‘engaged employees’ in their teams is a critical ingredient to high performance and sustainability.  This means they need to be aware of the impact they are having, positive or negative, on their people.  Gone are the days of autocratic management, or a one size fits all ethos.  This is a good thing in my opinion (and in the opinion of many employees).

    I have developed a model that shows the influence of managers on their people and what impact that can have on an organisations business objectives.

    You can see the detrimental impact that Destructive and Ineffective managers are having, they create teams of Disengaged people or worse, a team of Saboteurs who are actively undermining your organisation.

    There are obvious benefits in developing your managers to a level that is at least Competent, they have teams that perform well and could be described as productive.  The real benefits that can lead to a competitive advantage comes from coaching your managers to the Skilled or Outstanding levels with teams of people who are Engaged at work or who become Champions for your business.
