Managers… stuck between a rock and a hard place?

Managers risk losing people if they don’t work out what they want.

Managers risk losing people if they don’t work out what their employees really want.  Which is worse?  To simply not know, or to know and not do anything?  Both aspects of this conundrum risks disengagement.

A recent Leadership, Employment and Direction (L.E.A.D.) survey conducted by Leadership Management Australia reveals several recent shifts in what employees want from work.  Perhaps not surprisingly, job security has moved down the list now that a more certain economic future seems likely.

Of some concern to me however is the finding that managers and leaders have a slightly different view from employees as to what most influences workplace performance, indicating that they don’t know what their employees want.  Part of my role is to help manage the changes necessary to align those perspectives in teams and organisations.  Keep in mind also that the influences as they’re listed in the table below are highly subjective.  What’s ‘reasonable’ to me may be completely unreasonable to the next guy.

The importance of investing in team members and giving them opportunities to shine as they grow in their roles was demonstrated by the rise of ‘Responsibility/independence’ from No. 4 to No. 2 in the list.  The list is summarised in the table below.  There are three columns that show what Employees what Managers and then Leaders think.  The numbers in the cells indicate the rank that particular item was given by that group.
