    Life’s too Short for Crappy Jobs

    Life’s too short to work in a crappy job.  Find a job you love and never look back.

    There are so many factors affecting and influencing career choice that it’s no wonder so many people just take what comes their way.  They ‘fall into’ their field or industry and that’s where they stay – for better or worse.  I have enormous empathy having been there myself and especially after having worked with so many people as they tackle the question of “what do I really want to do with my life?”  It’s difficult to sift through the endless opportunities, to weigh up the pro’s and con’s and to decide what risk you will accept for what level of reward.  You’re never comparing apples with apples as each career choice is different in terms of what it requires, what it provides, how well it fits with you personally and your plans.  Then add in the enormous variability that comes from different employers, or even a different manager!!  And lastly, as if that wasn’t difficult enough….. let’s add the fact that in many cases you will need to take action now (and sustain it) in order to attain something further down the track that you may or may not like and the whole problem of making informed career choices becomes just too hard for many of us.

    Now the falling into job is not all bad.  In some cases, this works well for people who where either very luck, or perhaps had made good initial choices about the general direction they wanted to go in or have subsequently tweaked things in order to perform work that is more rewarding and enjoyable.   And then there are the truly blessed who’s work is a calling and they’ve just known it and relentlessly pursued it.  By the way, this is rare people so don’t beat yourself up if it’s not you.  It’s not most of us.

    In many cases and for whatever reasons the net result is that our experience is a ho-hum kind of work-life where you’re turning up and going through the motions, maybe even enjoying it in bits, but it’s not like you’re realising your full potential or setting the world alight.  The most common explanation or rationalisation of this scenario that I hear is “I work to live, not live to work.”  To my mind that’s someone selling themselves short.  I get that they don’t exist just to perform whatever role it is that they’re doing right now but I do take issue with the fact that inherent in that statement is the belief that work is evil and life is good.

    The world is changing right?  Meaning that the opportunity to pursue and obtain work that is meaningful, rewarding, challenging, flexible and above all, enjoyable is greater than it has ever been before.  So if you’re not enjoying your work, or thinking that there’s got to be more to life than this then it’s time to assert your rights and take responsibility for your situation and make changes.

    Career planning is the mechanism by which an individual gathers information about their interests, skills, preferences, lifestyle ambitions and the world of work and makes informed decisions about what they can and can’t, will or won’t do for their work.  It’s challenging, it’s ambiguous, it can be frustrating and it may require you to let go of firmly held beliefs and assumptions about life, work and your place in the world.

    Perhaps the single most common advice I provide to clients, friends and family when talking about career is…  “Experiment.  The only way you can stuff your career up is to stand still.”  So, what experiment would you like to try?
