    Career Planning Simplified

Career planning is the process by which you take stock of your interests, skills, wants and needs and make plans as to how you can identify and attain work that aligns with them.

It’s been my experience that most people spend more time planning their annual holiday than they do thinking about and planning their career.  Seems a little crazy to me given how much time we have to actually spend at work doing our careers.  I think part of the challenge is that we’ve got this seemingly endless amount of time to ‘get round to it’.  There seems to always be something more pressing…. or just more interesting.  Another part of the problem is that for most of us, it’s just so damn hard to think about what you want to be doing with your career in 1, 5 or 10 years time.  By the way, it turns out human beings aren’t very good at predicting or anticipating their future needs.

    Career Planning Made Easy

I want to try and simplify the career planning process for you.  You know what they say…. baby steps.

I want you to think about 3 simple questions.

    1. What do I like doing?
    2. What am I good at?
    3. How could I do more of that?

Don’t think about income, required training, the time it might take, or even whether it’s going to be perfect for you (waaay too much pressure there).  Just answer the three questions.  If nothing comes out, try again by asking:

    1. What else do I like doing?
    2. What else am I good at?
    3. How could I do more of that?

Perhaps you could ask someone who knows you well and see what they come up with.  If you’re unable to come up with useful answers to those questions…. Well congratulations.  You’re one of the lucky ones for whom anything will do…..
